I have been watching AMC since I was a very little girl. I even subscribed to AMC magazine for several years. I’m now 29 and I still enjoy tuning in. However, while watching one of my favorite holiday comedies, National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation, I was surprised to see that the scene in which Aunt Bethany says grace was edited so that the words ‘under God’ were not spoken in the Pledge of Allegiance. REALLY, AMC?! I find this absurd for several reasons. 1) The family is saying ‘grace’ while 2), celebrating CHRISTMAS as per the title of the film … decidedly God-centered activities. Third, you’ve equated the words ‘under God’ with another line edited from the film, “…the ****er was full!” (Those of you familiar with the film know this hilarious scene …) I could go on about how you’ve also tampered with the artistic integrity of the film beyond the limits of censorship … etc.
Mind you, I don’t approach this as being offensive from a religious perspective. I just think it’s ridiculous. I grew up saying the pledge, as did most people my age, and while I respect the right of any one else NOT to say it, I think it’s unwarranted to change the words of the Pledge of Allegiance for the sake of an American television broadcast of an American film airing on American Movie Classics.
Please think about it.
